Im planning on buying 1968 Chevy Chevelle Malibu four doors, has camel hump heads with a 307 engine. Has 46k. Miles. It has two barrel, dual exhaust and brand new paint. The owner told me it needed head gasket (Not sure what that is). The staus is clean. He says it starts and runs but after a while it overheats so to cost further damage on the car he took the battery out and it just there. This the message he sent me "it runs but the car overheated on me and i blew the head gaskets and one lifter...it turns on and runs .. is not worth more risks thts why i recome". I told him about how much he thinks it would cost he said about 600-800 if serous damage 1200. To reuilt the complete motor

rebuilt motors are around $2500 at least. the 307 isn't apowerful motor, but the car is also 46 yr sold so it's how bad do you wan tit an dare you willing ot put he money into it. If it has a bad lifter it's probably the cam is shot but if you are going to Overhual the motor not rebuild it then it's replaced anyhow. it 's up to you.

Like I said in the first reply it's not going to be the lifter its' going to be a cam they had bad camshafts for several years . It cold lead ot something else as well. If you are going to change one head gasket you may as well do both. if you are going to do it your self it's cheaper with what I've said probably around $700 to have it done 1200 for gaskets and another 500 or so for the cam. But prices vary and check locally they may do it cheaper. And whatever this guy is telling you - he doesn't care he wants to get rid of the car so they lie or just plain don' know and are guessing. it cold also be a valve guide problem as they had that as well. Is it truly a head gasket or a cracked head/block? You don't know until you get into it. especially with a car that has been sitting and is almost 50 yrs old.
