engine is running rough after replacing intake manifold

1966 Chevy 427/425hp engine. Replaced intake manifold. Installed distributor. Started, but couldn't get engine to run right. Pulled distributor & noticed whitest/grayest goo on base of distributor drive gear. Water?? Reinstalled distributor, ran engine
