VW Beetle 1200 engine

I'm pretty sure while having body work done on my bettle that a different engine was put back in my body. There are a few things not consistent with my old motor. I'd like to know where I find the serial number om my engine so I can check it out for sure that way before I proceed.

If my memory is correct numbers stamped on left side of housing for generator
