switched over the regulator from mechanical to electric

64 mercury comet replaced alternator and switched over the regulator from mechanical to electric pulled the positive cable and it still died??? alternator wont charge battery i did a switch over on the charging from generator and mechanical voltage regulator?

Its is suppose to stall, never disconnect the battery with the car running.
