SEVERAL POSSIBILITIES HERE
THE FLOAT IS STUCK "UP" AND DON'T MOVE
YOUR GAUGE IS SCREWED UP
SOMEONE TIED SOMETHING INTO THE SENDER WIRE
WIRED INCORRECTLY
. OR MY FAVORITE!
THE SENDER WIRE IS SKINNED/ PINCHED AND IS NOW PERMANENTLY GROUNDED SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THE GAUGE AND TANK (AND NOTHIN'S WRONG WITH THE SENDER)
PRETTY MUCH, FROM THE '80s ON BACK, THE FUEL GAUGE AND SENDER WORK THE SAME WAY. EVEN MY '46 WILLYS JEEP (PICS AT BOTTOM)
JUST SO YOU UNDERSTAND THE GROUNDING THING, A "NORMAL TEST" TO SEE IF THE GAUGE WORKS IS TO TAKE THE SENDER WIRE LOOSE AT THE TANK AND GROUND IT TO THE FRAME/ BODY, IF THE GAUGE RISES, THE GAUGE IS GOOD!
. THEREFORE IF THAT WIRE GROUNDS ANYWHERE, THE GAUGE WILL TOP OUT
IN YOUR CASE YOU MIGHT NEED TO TAKE THE SENDER WIRE LOOSE AT THE GAUGE AND THE TANK, AND RUN A TEMPORARY JUMPER WIRE IN IT'S PLACE, JUST TO VERIFY THE GAUGE AND SENDING UNIT ARE FUNCTIONAL AND THE PROBLEM WOULD THEN BE THE ORIGINAL SENDER WIRE GROUNDED OUT
I CAN ALSO SEND YOU A WIRE DIAGRAM (OF THE SENDER AND GAUGE) FOR MY OTHER JEEP ('77) THIS WILL NOT BE ACCURATE COLOR WISE AND YOUR GAUGE MAY BE A HAIR DIFFERENT TO YOURS, BUT YOU CAN SEE HOW IT WORKS. IF YOU DESIRE IT (I CANNOT GET A DIAGRAM FOR YOUR CAR)
THE PICS FOR MY '46 MAY SHOW YOU ALL YOU NEED, AS THE FUEL TANK IS UNDER THE DRIVER'S SEAT AND LITTLE WIRING IS INVOLVED. A GROUND WIRE AND THE SENDER WIRE (LAST PIC)
WILLING TO HELP ALL YOU WANT, DON'T FEEL A FEW REPLIES IS TOO MUCH (SOME OF MY JEEP CJ REPLIES GO OVER 100)
YOUR TURN
