I spun a rod bearing and decided to rebuild instead of getting a new engine. I ordered the gasket set, crank, rods, rod bearings, head bolts and rings from Rockauto. I have driven about 1,000 miles since the rebuild. I know they will use a little oil after a ring job, but it is using a quart a day now. Just a puff when I change gears. The only code it has is the P0410 O2 sensor heat circuit. The rear O2 was removed last year when I straight piped it and put a fart can on and has never had the code before. Also, will not rev past 4,000 rpm. The number one cylinder has a black spark plug and oil on top of the piston. Cylinders two through four are dry but have grayish white spark plugs. I looked up the part number of the rings that were not used to rebuild, Rock Auto sent two sets, they are for a Subaru 2.5L! The rings I installed fit the pistons and cylinders with no problems, looked good to me, lol. My question is, will replacing the rings again and changing the fuel filter fix it? Or am I missing something?

Good morning.

The 410 code is for the air pump not the O2 sensor. Description below.

As far as the engine, you may have damaged a ring installing the piston into the cylinder. If that is not the case, then the cylinder itself may be the issue. If it is out of taper or out of round it would explain the oil usage.

Did you have the block bored when the overhaul was done?

Roy

DTC P0410 determines if the Air Pump System is operating properly. During air pump operation, the PCM monitors the oxygen sensor output. The additional air pumped into the exhaust manifold causes the oxygen sensor to indicate a lean condition in a properly operating system. If the oxygen sensor does not indicate a lean condition for a fixed amount of time, it will fail the DTC P0410 diagnostic test.

DTC PARAMETERS

DTC P0410 will set when:
The oxygen sensor does not indicate a lean condition during air pump operation.
No MAP, TP EGR, O2S, Misfire or Fuel Trim DTCs are set.

The diagnostic for DTC P0410 will only run when the air pump is on. If the air pump runs only for a short period of time, the P0410 Diagnostic Test may not run.

DIAGNOSTIC AIDS
Use the Scan Tool Air Pump Special Test to verify if a problem exists. The Special Test turns on the air pump for 30 seconds and forces the DTC P0410 Diagnostic Test to run.

Did you hone the cylinders and stagger the rings?

Cylinders honed, machine shop pressure checked heads and block, said it was good. Tearing down engine this weekend to change rings. Cannot find a air pump on the car. It is not on the passenger side between engine and radiator where the internet says it is supposed to be. O'Reillys said only California cars came with them, but also say my car only came in a three door version. Lol. The fuse box has a slot for a air pump relay and fuse but no wires on the bottom.

And how do I make my scan tool do a air pump test? I have only used it to read and erase codes.

Okay.

You need an advanced scan tool to activate the air pump.

You said they honed but not bored. The taper or out of round may be the issue. Need to be checked.

Another thing is if you did not remove the ridge from the top of that cylinder and you installed new rod bearings, it could be enough to break that top piston ring if it hit that ridge.

Machine shop checked head and block out for me and said it was all good. Where is the air pump supposed to be on the motor? And after I tear it down this weekend I am sending the heads and block back to the machine shop. If it is not the rings, could it be a valve seat?

Okay, picture below for the air pump.

No, to the valve seat. It is a cylinder issue as I have stated.

Check the rings when you remove them and look at the pattern on the walls.

No air pump under my hood. Previous owner probably removed it. Never had a code until the rebuild. I found the wire for the rear O2 sensor zip tied. I appreciate all all of your help. I am almost convinced rock auto sent the wrong rings or sent defective ones. Will not be able to tell until I pull it back apart.

Yes sir I double checked everything, it was my first time rebuilding a four cylinder. Only done V8 Chevrolet's and motorcycles before. Had to rent the ring spreader tool thing they told me I had to use. Followed the Haynes manual steps and watched videos. 99% sure the rings were put in right.

I still think you have a cylinder that needs to be bored from wear.
