Hi,

I've been following the "how to build a BBC" series as I'm building my own IV 454. It's been invaluable to me, so thank you so much!
I'm installing my heads (Ed per RPM 60455) and they're the same as yours, I think. My question is, what are the 1/2" holes, on each head, used for? My heads came with black pipe plugs for these to block them and I noticed you had yours in there too.
Do I need to put a steam hole in these plugs, or just plug as is?
I've tried to add a pic.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Jonathon,

Thanks so much for watching this series. For all others that view this post, here is a link to the first video of the series:

https://youtu.be/8es2qK6MA_E

As for this specific question, I am going to ask Ryan, who is in the videos, to jump in on this and get you exactly what he did with his heads.

I will send this to him but if we can give him a day or so to get back to you because he is in the shop making more videos and not on here answering questions so it may take a little bit.

While we wait, do you think you can get a picture of what you are talking about just to be sure we are all on the same page?

Thanks

Hey there!

Thanks so much for watching the series! I am so glad it has helped you out and you are building a big block with it. It is so cool! Please let me know how it goes when you are finished.

So, I have attached an image to the coolant port I think you are talking about. Ours came pre-installed I believe. Tough to remember every detail. It goes directly into water, so you are going to need some pipe tape on the fitting when you install it.

Thank you for using 2CarPros!

Best Regards,
Ryan

Thank you so much for your response. Just wondering if you drilled a small steam hole in that plug, or just left it. What would this port be used for otherwise?
I've attached a pic of mine.
Good luck with the rest of your projects.
Cheers,
Jonathon

I would not drill a hole in this for steam. Basically, you want the cooling system to remain sealed and if you put a hole in the plug then you would have just introduced a coolant leak.

This port is a port into the cooling passage so in some race applications they want to know cylinder head coolant temperature so you can put a temperature sensor in there.

Otherwise, it just gets plugged.
