Drivers side door has sagged over time and cannot see any adjustment, have been advised to place block of wood under door and jack it up until door fits again. This seems a bit harsh and obviously something will have to bend or distort. Are there any adjustments that could be made?

Some manufacturers don't bother to put adjustments on their doors, but regardless, those adjustments don't move on their own. First, lift on the rear edge of the door. If you feel looseness, replace the upper hinge pin and bushings. Most auto parts stores have the kits that fit many cars.

Ford also used to be famous for using doors that were really heavy and the front panels would bend with age. The person who told you to bend it with a floor jack was just telling you to bend the door back to its original shape. We used to do that quite often on larger Ford cars. Use a block of wood on the jack to prevent damage to the paint.
