I was driving today with no problem. When I pulled into a parking space got out, then came back to my car to leave, the car would not start, it just rolled backwards. It would go into park, but no drive. The gear drive was just sliding back and forth. I parked the car and left it in front of my hair salon and I did let the local police know that it had broken down so it would not get towed from in front of the building. The dashboard lights, did not even come on. I thank God I was not on the busy roadways or highway when this happened. What is the problem? This has never happened before. The car has never given me any problems until now. Some really nice people help my son push the car back into the car space because it would not do anything but roll backwards. I put the emergency brake on to make sure it did not roll backwards. It had been driving just fine all morning long without any warning lights coming on. That is why it is bothering me because none of the warning lights came on not even the check engine light and they all work fine. Please help a widow to know what to do. Thank you.

Good afternoon.

From the sounds of it, it looks like the shifter cable has failed. That is what connects the shifter to the transmission. That would also explain why it does not start.

I just found a recall for this issue. Re calls never expire even though it was in 2008. You need to call your local GM dealer and give them your VIN number to be sure it is covered.

# 14152E: Product Safety - Transmission Shift Cable Fracture - (Jan 8, 2015)

Subject: 14152E - Transmission Shift Cable Fracture Models: 2004-2007 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx 2004-2008 Chevrolet Malibu 2005-2008 Pontiac G6 2007-2008 Saturn AURA Equipped with 4-Speed Automatic Transmission (ME7/MN5)

The service procedure in this bulletin has been revised to include an inspection procedure. Please discard all copies of bulletin 14152D.

Condition

General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2004-2007 model year Chevrolet Malibu Maxx, 2004-2008 model year Chevrolet Malibu, 2005-2008 model year Pontiac G6, and 2007-2008 model year Saturn AURA vehicles equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission (ME7/MN5). These vehicles have a condition in which the transmission shift cable may fracture at any time. When the fracture occurs, the driver may not be able to select a different gear, remove the key from the ignition or place the transmission in park. If the driver cannot place the vehicle in park, and exits the vehicle without applying the park brake, the vehicle could roll away and a crash could occur without prior warning.

Correction

Dealers are to install a shift cable assembly and mounting bracket.

Vehicles Involved

All involved vehicles are identified by Vehicle Identification Number on the Investigate Vehicle History screen in GM Global Warranty Management system. Dealership service personnel should always check this site to confirm vehicle involvement prior to beginning any required inspections and/or repairs. It is important to routinely use this tool to verify eligibility because not all similar vehicles may be involved regardless of description or option content.

For dealers with involved vehicles, a listing with involved vehicles containing the complete vehicle identification number, customer name, and address information has been prepared and will be provided to US and Canadian dealers through the GM GlobalConnect Recall Reports, or sent directly to export dealers. Dealers will not have a report available if they have no involved vehicles currently assigned.

The listing may contain customer names and addresses obtained from Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any purpose other than follow-up necessary to complete this recall is a violation of law in several states/provinces/countries. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this report to the follow-up necessary to complete this recall.

Roy, I truly thank you so much for finding this out. I will call the GM Dealership ASAP! I am so very thankful for this information because I did not know how I was going to pay for the repairs, now it is GM's repair. This widow thanks you very much. God bless you.
