I was driving when all of a sudden, I hit the brakes because I came across a red light. The minute I hit the brakes the light went green; I kept on accelerating. When I kept accelerating a loud sound and the car stopped going forward. I immediately pulled over to turn off my car, turned it back on and it started making this weird sound, it sounds like it’s coming from the motor the serpentine belt around there. It won’t drive but my car will reverse. No overheating no nothing no check engine light to later on the check engine light came on with code p0731.

Hi,

Since you are hearing a sound like a belt, I need to know if the transmission fluid is clean and full.

Next, the code is related to a gear ratio issue in first gear. Is this the only code that is present? I ask because it could be an internal issue.

I attached the diagnostics below for you. Take a look through them and let me know if you are comfortable performing them.

Let me know.

Joe

Thanks for replying to my question. So, I will do that tomorrow morning but today I added some transmission fluid. Well, I didn’t my boyfriend he’s kind of sort of a mechanic he added transmission fluid and the car was reversing only and now it doesn’t even reverse. It sounds really horrible in every gear that I put a parking drive neutral it sounds horrible like a winding like if something came loose, it’s just horrible. I think it’s a transmission.

Hi,

Update: If you look below, I indicated my thoughts but wanted the site's owner's opinion. The first thing he said was the front pump. He did add a couple other possibilities, but they all require the transmission to be removed and likely overhauled. I wish I could provide better news, but we both thought the same thing.

If you wanted to check line pressure (as provided below) that would be conformation, but that is your call.

Listening to it, I suspect it is related to the front pump in the transmission. Were you able to perform the diagnostics attached above? Also, I am going to attach directions below for testing line pressure. If it is low, the transmission will need to be removed and inspected.

Also, I am going to ask the site owner to listen to it and see what his thoughts are.

Take a look through the line pressure testing procedures below and let me know if you are comfortable performing them.

Take care,

Joe
