Hi guys, my car is making a rhythmic humming noise at 60 mph+ which gets louder the faster I go. The kicker is that when the clutch is disengaged, the noise goes away. Also the engine does not make any noises when revved in neutral. As far as I can tell all these things should rule out wheel bearings, tires and engine. Why is it only making this noise at speed, in gear, and only at 60 mph+? Any ideas?

Hey 2BLIMITLESS,

I would say this points to a bearing gone in the drivetrain somewhere.

When you disengage the clutch there is no longer load on the bearing from the engine.

The next step would be to run the vehicle up on a hoist and then to test with a stethoscope to try and locate the cause of the noise.

A bad bearing should be able to be located by this method.

Can you feel the vibration through the floor of the car?

Is your vehicle still in warranty?

Regards, Joe
