What are the replacement costs of a water pump and engine mounts?

Hi guys,

This has been bothering me for some time. My close friend was charged $5,000 for a water pump replacement and new engine mounts to be installed by a BMW dealership near Silver Spring, Maryland.

She does not know anything about cars and trusts the dealership not to take advantage of her.

But this seems incredibly expensive for something I have done on my 1993 BMW E36 and which was relatively easy - although the engine mounts were a bit difficult and required the engine to be slightly lifted by an engine lift that was placed across the engine bay.

Do you know the rated number of hours to do this kind of work on this type of car? Even at $120 an hour, that would mean around 30+ hours of work plus parts!

Hi,

I'm not sure where you are located, but I'm not showing an X1 as an option. Both manuals start with an X3 with a 3.0L engine. See pic 1 below.

I attached parts and labor for the X3 with the 3.0L. Note that the prices on parts are for OEM parts. You can get them for much less aftermarket. Also, 30 hours of labor is nuts!

Take a look and let me know if this helps.

Joe

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the info. I thought there was something 'off' about the pricing. I will now have to break this to my friend and find out if she is willing to send me the invoice to have a look at. I will let you know how it goes.

By the way, I'm located in Canada.

No problem whatsoever. I hope it helped. I went through my manuals, and it does not show the X1. However, the engine in the X3 is the same size so they can be too much different.

Take care and if I can help, let me know.

Joe

Hi Joe,

I broached the subject today with my friend and she does not want to revisit this as it happened about a year ago and she doesn't see how this info can help her. I did mention that I could help on the legal front (I have helped a few people in England and the US in legal matters), but she does not want to do so. Thanks anyway.
