VSC, check engine, AWD lights came on tonight at the same time. Luckily I was near my mechanic who scanned and the code said something to do with ignition coil. However, he erased it. What is potentially wrong? Is it safe to drive it now that he erased it?

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros. Com.

I wish I had the code he erased. To be honest, I do not understand why a coil would affect the stability control or the ABS. I feel confident those two are tied together. Chances are one of the wheel speed sensors (ABS sensor) has failed. As a result, it will set both the ABS light and VSC light. They work in conjunction with each other.

Now, if you have a coil issue which could have set the check engine light, you would have most likely felt a vibration or misfire. Did that occur? Also, was the brake light on too, in addition to the other lights? Low brake fluid can cause these lights also. As far as the ABS light and VSC light, if they are on, those components will not function. However, that does not mean you are going to lose brakes. If the brake fluid is very low, turning on the lights, that is a different story. However, I would find it hard to believe that the mechanic did not check fluid level.

Let me know if you have other questions. I hope something I mentioned helps.

Take care,
Joe

Hi Joe,

Thank you for the prompt response. I have attached a picture of the warning lights on the dash at the time. You mentioned the ABS light but it was actually the 4WD light. Are the two the same thing? Thanks a lot again.

Welcome back:

Honestly, I can't answer as to why I said ABS. I meant AWD. Sorry. I was into about my 15th work hour of the day. LOL

ABS and AWD/4WD are different, but believe it or not, they are still part of the same electronics.

As far as the 4wd and VSC, they both are controlled by the anti lock brake sensors (ABS). The ABS sensors function as a speed sensor. When the car is moving, each one is expected to be turning at the same speed. When there is a variation in speed, for example the left front wheel shows 50 mph and the other three wheels show 35 mph, the computer sees that as one wheel is spinning and then actuates the AWD as well as the VSC. In reality, brake pressure is applied to the faster spinning wheel when the accelerator is pressed to compensate power to the wheels not slipping and braking to the wheel that is. It helps the driver control the vehicle. It Sounds complicated but it is a very basic concept that involves many different sensors, electronics.

I hope that didn't confuse you. I tried my best to explain it. With all of that being said, a simple wheel speed sensor (aka ABS sensor) may have failed, be in the process of failing, or lost signal for a brief amount of time. Thus, setting the lights. However, that still doesn't answer the coil issue the mechanic told you.

If the light is staying out, it may be a one time incident. See if it comes back. If it does, let me know what codes are recorded when the scan is done. That will give me a much better idea of where the problem starts.

Please let me know if you have other questions or need additional help.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

Joe

Welcome back:

That code is for the cylinder one ignition coil. I am still not sure how it is related to the other issues. Regardless, has the light come back on or have there been any other issues?

If the same code comes back, you may have to replace a faulty coil.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Take care,
Joe

Yes, it came back twice. Once after the mechanic cleared it with his OBD scanner and it came back again after I cleared it with my scanner. Mechanic thinks it an electrical part that is in the ignition switch but I think it is what you said. What do you think?

Welcome back:

If you are referring to the P0351, there is an easy check. I mentioned that is a code related to coil pack/cylinder one. Switch that coil pack with the coil pack on cylinder two. If the problem cylinder misfire shows as P0352, that means the problem moved to a different cylinder and the coil/igniter needs replaced.

As far as the other issue, a live data scanner needs used. While the vehicle is driven, each wheel speed sensor needs checked to see what speed is being sent to the computer. If one is different or not working, replace that sensor and recheck.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have questions. You mentioned he feels it is an ignition switch related issue. That is possible but unlikely.

Take care,
Joe

I will try this Monday when I get home. Two things happened over the weekend. On Friday evening I used a power hose at the carwash to wash out the wheel wells hoping it was a dirty speed sensor :). Alas the lights came off until Sunday evening I was driving on the highway, I lost power for a while, then the lights came back on. The vehicle kept 'bucking' on the highway. I will clear the code and try what you said.
