I need to remove the center console in order to connect loose transmission linkage connection. I found two screws in the bottom of the console tray and two plastic screws on the sides of the console. I was told there are two more screws located behind the pen holder. Where is the pen holder? How do I get the last two screws out?

How can I disable the button in the shift lever? It is visibly broken, and not worth replacing.

Disconnect the electrical connector to it at the harness.

Thanks for answering my question, but I don't know where the electrical connection is or what you mean by harness. This is an automatic, and when the button does not pop out, I can't get the key out of the ignition. The whole thing seems mechanical not electrical.

Sounds like the gear selector knob is bad and trust me, they do go bad. If it were the cable that was bad you would have problems trying to get it out of park. To replace the knob pull the leather boot down. Grab it near the top and feel for the ring. Squeek and twist to remove. Once the boot is down put it in nuetral and push button inside and pull knob up. It will be pretty hard and be carefull not to smack yourself. To instsall I usually get a bundle of shop towels and a rubber malet. Put shop towels on top of knob and with rubber malet hit it in and then re install leather boot. Good luck and keep me posted.

Thanks for telling me how to take care of that! Guess I will make sure I have a replacement before I try to get this one off. Also, thanks for giving me a name to call the knob. Couldn't quite come up with it. Will try the advice. Do you know any good places to get used parts?

You can try local junk yards for the knob, or go to Volvo or as JIS suggested, try Auto parts link on this site.
