Electrical problem
2002 Volvo S60 6 cyl Automatic 95000 miles

I took my car to an auto parts store and the attendant pulled 2 codes. First one was PO504 Brake switch A/B (which I can't find anywhere) and PO571 Brake switch A malfunction. It all started with the ABS brake light coming on. Shortly after that the check engine light came on and then the odometer stopped working. Now, the ABS light is off, the odometer is working but the check engine light is still on. Can you help me understand what these codes mean and possibly a website to check out to get more information on how to fix this.

Thanks so much,
Jamal

HI there, these are codes for the brake light switch and the cruise control brake switch, I would be replacing the brake light switch first.

I would recommend taking it in to Volvo for a proper diagnostic. First thing they need to check to see if the brake control module fell off line? If it did then they would need to check to see if the problem is in the central electronic module, brake control module, engine control module, or the network cable? If one of the modules is bad the dealership would need to replace it since it will require reloading software to the control unit. Most likely the brake control module has an internal fault but it is an expensive guess so that is why you need to take it in for proper diagnosing.
