Smells problem
2001 Volvo S60 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

2001 s60 2.5 I5 non turbo. I have a gas smell coming from the engine bay. The smell only happens when the car is running and the smell dissipates when the hood is open. I have taken the car to a Volvo dealership and other shops and know one can trace the smell and they dont know what is causing it. Should I be concerned or just wait until I can find a visible leak?

You could have an exhaust leak? If you do have a fuel leak, the most likely place would be the fuel pump but that is in the rear of the gas tank but the smell is pretty strong and could be traveling up front. Look on the passenger side of the tank for residual marks of gas. If it is the pump leaking you could still be covered by the 10 year/150,000 mile extended waranty. Good luck and hope this helps.

I have a 2002 S60 that had a gas smell and occasionally difficulty starting.

The problem was caused by a defective fuel pump. Be careful when buying parts online. The entire fuel pump assembly had to be replaced not just the fuel pump proper. Hope this helps you.
