Engine Mechanical problem
1994 Volvo 850 Automatic 80000 miles

My car cuts out at times. Then after about a min it starts and drives just fine. It cuts out at low rpm.I have put a new battery and egr valve.I have read some of your questions and it seems other people have this same problem.I have had this car at the dealer twice and it stiil is cutting out. Sometimes 100 min inbetween the problem.I also checked to see if the battery was getting charged. It was. This happens mostly when the car is at running temp.I can reproduce the problem if I run the car for a bit then turn it off. When I go to restart it the the problem starts. It's as if it's only getting a drop of gas just enough to turn it over then it shut off. No matter how many times I try it will not start until a few min has gone by. If I walked away from the car when it happens and don't try to sit there and turn it over. Come back in 2 or 3 minutes It will fire right up. It has always start cold. The car idles smooth no sputter. Last time The car was on the scope they said the egr was failing clogged. Thats the last reading.

The car idles fine. Smooth. The car cuts out cold or running temperature. When I restart the car it takes 2min or so to start. It will fire but just for a second. As if there is just a drop or two of gas in the carb.I had it put on the scope and they said I needed an egr valve.I replaced it. Still get the cutting out at random times. Mostly at low rpm but at times driving slow down the street.

Hi Dennis,

Thank you for the donation.

I need more information to understand the problem and hope you can fill me in.

When the engine cuts out, was it easy to restart?
After restarting, was the idling speed stable?
Was any Diagnostic Trouble Code ever retrieved?
Under normal circumstances, was the idling speed stable?
Did it stall only when it is warming up, it happens only after engine is at operatiing temperature or both?

Hi Dennis,

You should have used the reply to question link so that notification would be received. By editing the post, no notification is sent out so we do not know if you had replied to the post.

The problem seems to be fuel related and since it is starting not very long after waiting, you might not have sufficient time to do any testing before it can start again.

Since it is only stalling at low engine rpm, I would suspect the Mass Air Flow sensor for the fuel delivery circuit.

Another item to check would be the fuel pump relay or fuel pump. They could be intermittently failing.
