I have an 89 240 dl and I have had a problem with a constant grinding sound on the front driver side wheel when I apply the breaks. I took the wheel off and noticed I do have a small leak on the (dont know the name) where the break fluid goes into to go to all the wheels. A valve of some sort. And I see no problems with my pads and or the wheel bearing. Could this be my problem or is it the caliper?

Look for rust buildup on the back side of the rotor. If the rotor appears dull gray and rough, look closer at the inside pad. They can wear unevenly so one end looks fine and the other end is grinding metal-on-metal.

Does the car have anti-lock brakes? If so, could you be hearing the hydraulic control unit activating?
