2002 Volkswagen Passat strong gas smell

I filled my car with gas this evening and parked after driving for about an hour. I went back outside to my car later and smelled gas outside. Opened the door and there was a overpowering smell of gas inside. No evidence of gas on the ground behind car. could not see in front of car

Double check for leak from front to rear to include the engine compartment, also check the charcoal canister if its saturated with gas-if so have the evaporative control system checked out-
