Jetta 1990 runs great, great compression serviced regularly, new engine (rebuilt) one year ago. Recently began to stop for no apparent reason, left to sit for one hour, starts up no problem. This occurs at times on the hiway at speed, and at times when a short hop to store and will not restart for about one hour, I have been to local mechanic and to dealership and it is still a headscratcher. Other than this, it is a great little automobile!

There are many things that can stop the car from running we need isolate the system that is failing, it will be related to the ignition system or fuel injection system. It could be a crank sensor, cam sensor, pcm relay, ignition module, pcm, fuel pump etc, is the check engine light on? If so you can scan the pcm for trouble codes and go from there. please let me know what you come up with.
