I have a 96 jetta gl (83k) 2.0L. The problem that im having is that at the driver side door I cannot activate the alarm and or open/lock up the other doors. This IS possible from the passenger door. It will even lock the driverside door! I replaced the door lock actuator(sP) with a unit found in a junk yard and still no results. I checked the wires in the door and all connections seem fine. Was wondering if there is something else that could be causing this problem. Not sure if this helps but when I set the alarm from the other door the led light on driver door does NOT turn on either. Thanks!

I am having this same problem with the exception that I haven't yet attempted to fix the problem. I'd really rather not take it to the dealership. I'm mostly worried that the passenger side is going to quit working and I won't be able to shut off the alarm at all.

I had the same problem a couple years ago with very similar symptoms. It turned out that the wiring in the rear drivers side door had shorted. Open the boot surrounding the wiring going from the body frame to each of the doors and inspect for some sort of short in the wiring. I would start with the driver's door since that is the door most often used in any car. Go to the next most often used door and so on until you determine that all the wires are intact and not frayed or the plastic covering cracked from repeated door opening stress.
