I have a 98 VW Jetta GL 2.0L with 140K miles. The 5 speed manual transmission sounds like it needs fluid. I know the manual calls for synthetic 75-90W oil, but where do I pour it in? I can find the drain plug underneath, but don't know where the fill plug is located.

Thanks!

On manual tranny's there are actually what look like two drain plugs. The one is an actual drain plug but the other is the fill plug. The only difference is the height or location of the plugs. One is low and one is higher. Look and you will find the plug. The oil jugs you purchase usually have a squirt top. Now let me add this to the mix.

If the tranny takes any more fluid than a squirt, read on, but I would hope that when you unscrew the plug there is fluid slowly oozing out. If not and it seems that the tranny is taking a bit of oil, I would first of all watch it closely. If you have to add again, while down there look for possible leaks. One place to start looking will be where the axles are inserted in to the tranny. The seal could be leaking. Once the CV axle is popped out, which is a fair amount of work but very doable by a DIYer, the seal can be popped out and replaced.

Hope this helps and good luck!
