97 Jetta overheating. Have taken a 97 Volkswagen Jetta GT in for overheating. $710.00 later, they have replaced upper radiator hose, water pump and timing belt. And it is still overheating. Have taken there (3) times in past 4 days, they claim the car is fine, but can not drive more than 5-10 miles before still overheating. Drove 7 miles at most and coolant boiling over into overflow. Claim need $200.00 for thermostat check/replacement. Am I an idiot? What do you suggest?

No your not an idiot it sounds to me like the shop you took it to didnt do they're job properley the first time as a rule of thumb in my shop anytime we do a water pump job a thermostat goes with it but I wouldnt take your car there again I would go somewhere else with a better reputation maybe more expensive but have them also check the engine with a CO (block tester) to see if the headgasket might be blown hopefully you just need a thermostat though its a shame the shop you took it to didnt do that in the first place though. Anyway hope this helps
