2001 Volkswagen Jetta Engine surge, loss of power

2001 Volkswagen Jetta 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 150K miles

Today while driving my car I experienced a loss of power in 5th gear, not a huge loss but enough that was noticeable. Later my car surged a little in 1st and 2nd gear then was fine in 3rd and 4th.

I have noticed recently my car needs exhaust work and possibly a catalytic replacement as it rattles (still under warranty). Would this have anything to do with my recent loss of power and surging or what is the issue and is the car okay to drive until I take it to my mechanic this week?

If pieces of that rattling converter are cutting off exhaust flow, yes it could have a lot to do with it! These pieces can also blow into your muffler and get lodged in it, so you will have to possibly replasce the entire exhaust as well.
