Hello,

I read a related A&Q on the website asking for descriptions of engine codes. Recently my check engine light came on and an auto repair place found two codes in my car: P0118 and P0140.

I learned that P0140 is the rear O2 sensor. The previous answer on your website explained how to change it - which I would usually have my Dad do, but I am away from home for another year. What happens if this is not replaced for some time and how long can a car perform without it being replaced?

I also learned that P0118 is for Engine Coolant Temp. About a year ago my car overheated due to a torn radiator hose. We replaced the hose and checked the plugs for moisture and everything has been fine since. Is it possible that this code has been sitting in there since then without turning on the check engine light?

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

The code 0118 may be left over form the overheat. You can erase all codes by disconnecting the battery cable for a couple of minuetes, keeoing in mind, if you do, you will have to reset the clock and radio memories. If the 0118 code comes back, replace the temp sensor. If you don't, it won't hurt anything as lond as your cooling fan if functioning and it doesn't overheat again. The O2 sensoe code 0140 may or maynot come back. If it does, you can still drive the car forever, but you will have to put up with the light being on and a possible loss of fuel economy. Hope this answers your questions and thank you for the donation, Jim.
