I have a Mk4 ('99 - '04) Jetta. If you have a Jetta from the same era, the trunk light I controlled by a microswitch that is located on the trunk lock mechanism. It commonly stops working, but is a relatively easy fix. Once you've gotten the replacement switch (about $20), you'll need a screwdriver and a socket set. Remove the liner from the inside of the trunk lid, then remove the lock mechanism. The microswitch can then be replaced by unplugging the old one and plugging in the new one. Installation is the reverse or removal.
