Hi there,
The CV boot is a rubber boot that covers the constant velocity joints, these are flexible drive units that allow the front drive shaft to turn (steering) while rotating. If they are torn the grease in side is lost and dirt and road muck will enter and destroy the joint quickly. Often this is the case as it may be weeks before the boot damage is noticed, the shafts will have to be removed to replace the boot so it is often a good idea to re new the CV as well, your mechanic will be better positioned to advise eon costs as they will vary depending on where they come from.
