My mechanic at sears noted that there were some cracks on a belt next to the coolant. He noted that it was best to replace and would cost $160 min. To $250. Does this sound right?

That sounds like it would be the timing belt, judging by the price. If so you should consider repalcing the water pump at thesame time to avoid having to go back in in a short period of time. Plan on the higher price, possibly a little more by the time they hi t you up for a thermostat and accesory drive belt.
