1988 Volkswagen Golf stalls

Hello everyone, I have a 88 Golf and when it warms up it will stall when put in gear. When I remove the oil cap while running it will also stall. Any ideas where to start please respond, or email me at flyingzucchinibrothers@live. Com Thanks. Mike

Removing the oil cap is probably causing a big enough vacuum leak to stall out an already starved engine, listen for vacuum leaks and check the air filter to make sure it doesn't have anything large clogging it.
