1984 Volkswagen Eurovan Inactive !st and 2nd gear

Transmission problem
1984 Volkswagen Eurovan 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 234K miles

When shifting into 1st or 2nd gear the vehicle will not respond.............
When shifting into 3rd or 4th gear the transmission is active and works. Reverse is active. The new clutch has only 30k miles.
What could cause the problem and can it be repaired ? Are transmission parts still available for a vehicle this age. Would fixiing this problem be expensive......

Hi there,

I would be checking the gear change linkage's. To loose 1st & 2nd and the rest ok is a bit strange. Make sure that the linkages are ok before removing the gear box.
