Sorry for the long story but I’m trying to give as much detail.

At around 97,000 miles I replaced the intake manifold with a after market one because I noticed there was a small crack in it that would pool coolant and settle in the valley. Then shortly after while driving on the highway a plug near the back passenger side of the manifold that was designed for a hose used by a different model vehicle (again after market manifold meant for multiple model Ford’s) popped off and shot coolant everywhere causing my truck to overheat. I bought a cap and clamp and secured the cap on refilled the truck with coolant and went on. When the truck would get up to highway speeds every once in a while the cap would fly off even while clamped and I’d start again it’s gotten to a point that I keep extra in the truck just encase. The truck has since overheated on me at least four different times because of this to the point that I just stopped buying coolant for it and ran it on water. This last time that it happened things turned out differently. Firstly while on the highway before anything I could hear a huge surge of air like my truck had a jet engine while accelerating. Thinking back on it honestly as this happened an 18 wheeler was passing by me so I naturally at the moment that it was them. Then I started over heating. So I pulled over got my cap and clamp popped the hood and instead of the usual cap the upper radiator hose at the radiator end blew off. So I inspected it for holes or cracks reattached it and filled it with water. Turned the truck on and it was reading at the normal temperature. I started on my way again but as soon as I got off the service road and back on the highway I could hear that loud jet sound again like my truck was forcing itself. I also noticed that it was making my truck feel sluggish. Once I got to about 66 mph I started to overheat again so I turned on my heater all the way up and pulled off the side of the highway once again and when I slowed it started getting back to normal temperature. Then I noticed that I didn’t have heat anymore at all just cold air. I kept the truck on and instead of the highway took the back way home. It didn’t overheat at the normal street speeds. While driving I noticed that the jet engine sound would come intermittently I'd get to a light it would turn green take off like normal nothing. Get to another light take off and get that noise again. Even as I was driving stepping on the gas would on and off cause the noise to come up. I got the truck home and started with a thermostat, didn’t help with anything so I did a flush of the heater core, lots of crud came out but again no heat and still have that noise. I’m thinking it might be the water pump causing the overheating with a mixture of a fan clutch going out making that noise. But I'm trying all the cheap stuff first before I go all in and start replacing parts only to be back at square one. I want someone’s opinion before I get start or to see if anyone has experienced this before and how did you resolve it. Thanks

Hello,

This could be your thermostat sticking and causing your coolant to boil in the block. A water pump that has gone out would also cause this. The boiling will be worse without coolant in the cooling system. The jet engine sound could be the steam going back up through your radiator and when enough pressure builds up it would the radiator hose off. I have included a few links for you to go to down below:

When I got the truck home I replaced the thermostat and did a complete flush of all the cooling system. I then filled it again but this time with actual coolant. I did this thinking it would help with the heating issue. Honestly though the old thermostat was just fine. I boiled it and it worked like it should. But the part was cheap so I just replaced it. I took it out around the block, but it started getting that noise again so I took it back home. The temperature was normal throughout that drive, I didn’t think it was a good idea to get it on the highway just yet if I could still hear that loud noise though.

Hello again,

Is there any way that you could take a video of it and upload to this site for us? It would be extremely helpful.

Thanks,
Alex
