We need to start with a possible vacuum leak. Here is a guide that will help walk through this:

Also, we need to check and see if there are any codes even if the check engine light is not on. If there are no codes then a vacuum leak is the most likely cause.
If you don't have the ability to pull codes, then most parts stores can pull them free of charge.
