I think the ring gear is broken. Probably caused other damage. What can I use if I can't find an exact duplicate used transmission?

Welcome to 2CarPros. Shouldn't be difficult to find a used transmission, there are lots of Subaru's out there. As for other ones that can be used, You are pretty much going to need the same transmission you have to make it work. You will need the date your car was built and which version of the Outback you have, the Impreza based Sport or the Wagon based on the Legacy. As well as which transmission Man or Auto you have.
What did yours start to do? A broken ring gear isn't very common, a broken half shaft is and would result in the car not moving.
