When I jack either front wheel off the ground and spin it by hand in neutral I can hear a rattling noise. This noise is heard when accelerating from a stop to about 30 mph. It is getting worse in the last month or so. I changed the transmission fluid this morning and it was black. I ran a magnet in the oil and discovered some metal filings.

Other than the rattle it seems to shift fine.

Just want to know if the transmission is on its way out or is this a simple fix?

Hey Ron,

Is this loud enough to get a recording of it? If so, can you post a video of it to this site so I can hear what it may be?

Just based on this info, metal filings in the transmission is never good but that by itself I would not think would cause a rattling like you describe. This sounds more like a half shaft clicking then in the transmission.

A recording of it will help a ton. If it does it with the wheels off the ground, the quieter the environment around you the better so we can hear just the noise. Thanks

I did record the noise to my phone’s voice memo but the only way to upload the recording is by messenger or text message.

The noise is in the middle of the recording.

The noise is identical regardless of which wheel is spun.

Unfortunately, we will need it posted here so it you can just take a video of it and post it that will help.

However, if the noise is the same on both front wheels, have you tried to put this in 4WD and see if it makes the noise? It appears this vehicle is rear wheel drive with a transfer case to engage the front. Also, the other thing you can do is get underneath the vehicle and use a screwdriver and place it on metal components and place your ear on the handle end to see where the noise is the loudest. Just spin the wheel while listening to try and pinpoint where it is coming from.

I will get a video this evening.
This is an AWD So it has a FWD tranny with a small gearbox at the rear wheels.

Its definitely not the cv shafts. I’m familiar with that sound from previous cars.

I found a tranny breakdown diagram 0n 7zap. Com and found a part in the tranny that could be the culprit. Number 206 in the diagram. It’s called a baffle, part number 24246165.

Number 204 is the tranny filter. No access to it.

Anyhow, I will jack up both wheel and put it in drive this evening and get some audio with a stethoscope on the tranny.

Okay. If it is FWD then yes. Something most likely inside the differential is what I would suspect. Thanks
