Hi,

I just purchased a 1997 Audi A6 2.8L Quattro (automatic) with a known problem with the gearbox.

A little bit of info about the car:

Has a heavy duty towing package (towed horse trailers!)
This current transmission was put on about 6-7 months ago and had problems right from the get-go. Two sets of ‘experts’ looked at the transmission and none of them could find anything wrong. By the time it was discovered that there was a problem that could not be fixed the warranty had run out (3 months).
It has an LPG (liquid petroleum gas) fuel system installed.

Gearbox problem:

Shifts up and down fine, although at times the up-shifting happens at a much higher rev range, until it gets into fourth. Once it gets into fourth it can’t downshift unless the car is bought to a stop, put into park, the engine turned off and then turned on again at which point it ‘resets’ and is able to start from 1st gear. It cannot shift into 5th at all.

Sometimes the gear shifting into first (drive) causes a thump to happen in the drive train. Sometimes this also happens when put into reverse. Also, when the car goers over a speed bump (and there are a lot of them in England!) Sometimes the car jumps out of gear and the engine ‘spins’ without any traction. This will also happen once in a while at low speed when going around a roundabout. In both instances the car eventually goes back into gear, when the engine speed comes down, with the corresponding thump.

The transmission pan was taken off two weeks ago and it was noted by the mechanic that the fluid ‘was the wrong color’ (a dirty yellow/brown color). There was no burnt smell and no bits floating in the fluid either. There was some sludge in the pan itself but I was told that it was within normal limits. New Amsoil ATF (red) was put into the transmission, although only about 5 litres was able to be put in as there was no transmission flush done, so some of the old fluid (about 2 litres worth) was still in the transmission when the new fluid was put in.

After this new fluid was put in the transmission seemed to up-shift and downshift fine and was a lot smoother until about ½ mile down the road when it reverted back to the way it used to be, though not being as bad. My feeling is that it needs another transmission fluid change to get rid of the old fluid as much as possible, but can you tell me if there is any other issue that you think it may be?

Hello,

This sounds like there is a problem with the catalytic converter being partially plugged up. Here is a guide to help you determine if this is the problem. If the exhaust is causing vacuum reading/ engine intake problems the computer thinks its still under load.

Please run this test and get back to us so we can continue helping you.

Best, Ken

Hi Ken,

Apologies for not keeping you updated on this problem. Unfortunately, I no longer have this car in my possession and was not able to implement the test as given in your post.
