Hi, I have a problem with my transmission, it was slipping on takeoffs, shuddering and then it wouldn't shift into 2nd gear, it's obviously got to be rebuilt. I had one shop look at it, but I was wondering how hard is it to remove and install one of those Mercedes NAG1 transmissions? And will a different one need to be reprogrammed at the dealership? It seems simple enough but the lack of adequate equipment is going to make it difficult. Edwards transmissions and engines are hinting towards a $2,500.00+ bill for rebuilding. What do you guys think I should do? Thanks!

Good morning,

That price is actually a good price for rebuilding that transmission.

As far as you removing it, you will need a lift and a transmission jack as well. If you have the equipment then it is a consideration.

My concern is this. If they do the whole job, you get a warranty. If you remove and install, then there is no warranty as you could do something wrong causing the transmission not to work correctly. With the new electronics today, the days of removing and installing are going away.

Thank you Roy. Just out of curiosity if I went with a shop replacing the transmission with a used one with low miles will it actually work? Will it move and shift okay and everything straight out of the shop? I know getting a used one is a big risk but I know of some for sale that's still in their vehicle and still drivable.

Hello, I'm Danny.

Just to add my 2 cents. Definitely which ever route you decide to go rebuilt or a good used transmission make sure you get some type of warranty. Usually a rebuild will offer a 1 year warranty and a used transmission will give you a 90 day warranty.I only say this was I got burned a few years ago by a fly by night transmission re-builder to save myself a few bucks. Long story short the cheaply rebuilt transmission went out on New Years Day at 1,435 miles. After trying to contact them I took the transmission out again and had my legitimate transmission guy (should have paid him in the beginning) and had him inspect. By me doing this that was the fly by night shops excuse to not warranty. Hope this helps. Thanks again for using 2CarPros.
