My car listed above (GL model) won't go in reverse and shifts hard. Kind of strange. When I push the gas pedal it's like the RPM's will go up higher than normal but if I let off a little it will shift on in. I drove it 55 MPH. I can't afford a new car and just don't know where to start but if it's confirmed I was going to replace transmission control sensor first I just don't know what to do. Please help.

Hi,

This can be several different things. However, let's start with the basics first. Have you checked the transmission fluid level and condition? Is the check engine light staying on when the engine is running?

If the check engine light stays on all the time, have the computer scanned to identify diagnostic trouble codes. This will likely point us in the right direction for a repair.

Here is a quick video showing how it's done:

I realize most people don't own a scan tool; however, most parts stores will do it free of charge.

Next, there is a transmission range sensor that is on the transmission and the shift linkage attaches to it. Check to confirm that it is properly connected to the cable and it is shifting properly. You will need a helper to shift through the gears while you watch.

I attached a pic below of the range sensor. See if you can locate it on the transmission. I circled connection locations and highlighted the sensor.

Let me know what you find. Also, let me know the condition of the transmission fluid. Is it a reddish color? Take a white tissue and wipe some fluid from the dipstick on it and take a pic to upload for me to see. Note if there is any burnt smell from the fluid as well.

_______________

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.

Take care,
Joe
