Transmission fluid backward compatible

I have the car listed above, that calls for Dexron III, but many shops no longer carry III. Only Toyota T IV, after calling a Toyota dealer, they told me that IV is backward compatible, but other online boards, say not so. Basically IV, is a upgraded version of the III according to who, you talk to.

Good morning,

As far as the fluid, yes, you can use a better fluid but never worse.

Dex 4 is approved by Toyota but you need to get all the fluid out of the transmission not just the pan. The torque converter holds around five quarts.

By the way, Dexron 3 is still available at parts stores as well as at Toyota dealerships as well.
