I recently noticed transmission fluid leaking from where my axle went into my transmission. Then learned that when I changed my CV axle a year before that, the output shaft seal should have been changed at the same time as the axle, but it wasn't, and fluid then was seeping from there. So, I got a new seal and tried to change it getting the old out was easier than getting the new one back in, in fact it has taken me about 6 seals attempts before I got it in without damaging the seal itself and mind you the seeping became a steady flow of fluid coming out to a fast drip, now causing in the first and fifth attempts all the fluid came out after turning off the car to the last time where the transmission was empty. So, as I'm putting fluid in, my car starts squealing smoke coming from my dipstick and a puddle underneath my car. However, on my CV axle itself there's a metal cap that comes on my axle that fits onto the seal from outside the transmission that came off it the while putting on the last seal. Can this cause the leak and does the axle need replaced again now since that metal part came loose or does it sound like the worst news possible, and my transmissions just gone out. I've had this car about 2 1/2 years and been able to drive it maybe 8 months total due to one issue after another.

It would be good if you could take a picture of the metal cap you are talking about and upload it. Also, I have had to freeze the seal to shrink it down slightly and use a heater to warm the transmission seal area which will expand it slightly. Do not run the transmission when it is down on fluid. Here are the instructions on how to replace the seal to help you with the repair in the images below.

See the round metal thing on the end of the shaft that goes inside the transmission and fits onto the seal I had to put inside of the transmission opening that's the part that looked like it was screwed onto the shaft somehow, but O'Reilly said its built onto the shaft and can't be replaced as its all 1 part. Anyways that is now moveable up and down the shaft so can that cause fluid to still come out of the seal area and will I have to replace it (the CV axle) again.

Yep, that would be the solution, the sealing ring has come loose, it is pressed into place which caused the problem, on the replacement shaft check to see if this ring is tight before installation.

I was told by Orielly's that the lip we are talking about doesn't come off and isn't replaceable without replacing the entire thing. So, when I took it out the last time I attempted replacing this seal for the 6th time and finally doing so and not damaging it I noticed the lip could now be moved. It looked like there are rings to screw it back on, but it didn't tighten down like it was originally. So, do I need to replace the entire axle again?

I'm going to upload again a picture of what my axle shaft looks like on the shaft end that goes into my transmission there's a metal cap like lip that slides onto the rubber of the seal once completely inside the transmission it's on the far left of the pic.

Well, I'm still waiting on your response as to whether or not il have to replace the axle since that metal lip now moves on the shaft. I'm hopeful you will respond soon but again I'm talking about the metal lip on the right end that enters the transmission.

Sorry for the delay. Yes, you need to replace the CV axle the metal seal retainer cannot move on the shaft.

Okay, thank you and I'm guessing it's a bad idea to drive like this also, right?

Yep, if too much fluid leaks out it can cause the transmission to burn up.
