That is very possible. In this case, you need to have a scanner to retrieve the diagnostic trouble codes which should point us in the direction of the problem. Here is a quick video that shows how one is used:

I realize most people don't own a scanner, but most parts stores will do it for free or lend/rent a scanner to you. My only concern is if a parts store will have a scanner that can read more than just engine codes. However, we need a starting point. If you could, have that done and let me know the results.
