Abrupt down shift most of the time after getting up to operating temperature when accelerating after reaching desired speed. Also it goes to neutral first for a split second causing a more severe down shift. Two years ago I had this same problem my mechanic change from Mercon to the older style oil and it solved the downshift. Now it is back and worse. My car is all original factory parts except aluminum radiator and mufflers no other parts have been changed or modified.

Have you checked the fluid level? Often times transmission shift issues happen when it is low. Start with that and let us know.

Have a transmission professional scan for codes it may be a valve sticking in valve body. Check fluid level as well.

Fluid level is fine could temperature be a factor because it seems to do better when cooler

I've never heard of a neutral safety switch causing this. That switch just keeps you from shifting out of park until you push the brakes. I have heard of a TCC solenoid (torque converter clutch solenoid) cause some funny shifting up and down and up down for no reason. It happens when the solenoid is too weak or if the fluid level is low on some cars.

Thanks for the info. I dropped my car off at a qualified mechanic. Downshifted once at 19 miles out of 50.

I didn't think they had a range switch like that in a 97. Interesting. Makes sense though
