Car changes to fifth and sixth gears only after resetting computer. It runs for a couple miles and then will only change up to fourth until computer is reset again. In sports mode it indicates that it is in fifth gear but revs do not drop.

Sounds as if there is a problem with a shift solenoid, a scan will show up any codes, and not all codes will set a check light, a live data read on a quality scanner will also show what the transmission electrical's are doing re shift solenoids and lock up clutches.
