Do you mean the shifter does not move or that it moves but you get no motion? If the first problem, it is likely the transmission interlock. It is job is to prevent you from shifting into gear without your foot on the brake. It uses a switch on the brakes, the ignition and those trip a solenoid the releases the shifter.
If the second problem, that could be a bad shift cable or the cable disconnected.
To check that you just look at the shift linkage on the transmission as someone else shifts the lever. If it moves fine but still no motion you need a transmission shop to look at it.
