We always need to start with checking the fluid level and condition. This will tell us the possible condition of the internals of the unit.
If the fluid is low or dark, then we want to change it and see if that helps but also to be able to see if there is metal or debris in the pan.

The next thing to do is check the line pressure of the unit. If there is a seal leaking or the pump is not working then that will cause this issue. The fact that reverse works means there is pressure but we need to know if there is proper pressure in each gear.
If this all checks out then you likely have a torque converter issue.
However, let's start with all this info and go from there.
