While driving, noticed a clanking noise which got progressively louder. Started to lose power, check engine lite went on. Van has 120,000 mi - engine and trans replaced around 80,000 mi. Towing guy thought it sounded like an exhaust problem. Dealer said spark plug and coil sheared off and fell into the cylinder. They welded something on to allow for reinstalling the plug and coil. $350.00

The service manager said we could take it and run it, but later called back to say the tech said he would suggest not using it. He said it sounded okay when it was just idling, but lost power when put under load. They then gave us a price of 3400 to rpair cylinder, etc. But they couldn't guarantee that there wouldn't still be something left inside the engine. What would you suggest. Thank you for any suggestion or comments.

IF IT WAS ME I THINK I WOULD HAVE THE HEAD PULLED, AND FIND A GOOD USED HEAD AND REPLACE THE BAD HEAD, THAT WAY YOU WILL BE SHUR EVERYTHING IS OUT OF THE MOTOR WHEN IT IS APART.

Picked up the repair invoice. #4 cylinder ignition coil broke and the spark plug came apart inside the cylinder. The threads for the spark plug were stripped out of the head. Helicoiled new threads. Installed a new coil and spark plug. It runs now but has a noticeable miss. Part of the spark plug might be embedded in the piston or valves. It will need a vew head or an engine if the cylinder wall are too scored.
