1991 Toyota Previa Mini van A/C whistles loud when turned on

I have a 1991 toyota previa with 175,000 miles on it. Everytime I turn on the a/c it makes a very loud whistling noise and it stays on for as long as I leave the a/c on, however I do have cold air coming out I dont know what the problems is please help me to even get started thank you.
