Engine Performance problem
1988 Toyota Pickup 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual
----------------------------------------------------------------
1988 Toyota pickup w/ carburated engine misses
at high speed and load--going up a hill on the interstate . It feels like it runs out of fuel. Ignition checks out OK.
No vacuum leaks found. Compression OK. New
carburetor (no change in problem). New fuel pump,
tank cleaned, fuel lines blown out. Catalytic convertor new (old one suspect for plugging, but
no change in problem). EGR valve OK. Have
retarded the ignition slightly w/ no change in problem.
I'm out of ideas and would welcome suggestions !

Thanks, Robert Tyler

I have a similar (?) problem with my '85 HiAce van, 3y motor, carby'd. At absolute full throttle, either on highway or stationary, a severe engine miss develops. Back pedal off a fraction (1/4") its as good as gold.
New distributor, (old one had seized A/R plate), replaced leads, Have checked cam angle and timing NUMEROUS times, new plugs etc. Have dismantled and cleaned carb, carb float level OK, replaced fuel and air filters, and PCV valve. Now looking for another carb to try. This miss is only at full throttle, like I said, back off the throttle a fraction its perfect!
