I need to know what kind of vehicle, engine tranny etc.

The gears you speak of are in the rear axle assembly and allow the vehicle to be propelled by the force from the tranny. It also allows each wheel on the rear to turn at different speeds so when you turn a corner one wheel won't slides. The axles connect to the assembly.
