Transmission problem
2004 Toyota Corolla 4 cyl Automatic 88,895 miles

My transmission is apparently about to go since my transmission fluid is black and smells burnt. The car has no indications that anything is wrong. If I repair it now, before the transmission actually slips, what is a reasonable cost estimate for a rebuilt transmission?

I would say wait. If you want to get a used one then parts and install then probably at least 1500. HTH.

I would go ahead and change fluid and filter, make sure the oil cooler lines are not blocked. Look for any metal shavings in pan.

As mentioned either a rebuild or a remanufactured trans will run around $1500-2000 plus install.

Another option is to get a used trans from junkyard.

There is no scheduled maint. For this trans, so either the oil cooler is blocked or you tow items with car?
