2001 Toyota Corolla Automatic 76000 miles

I recently took my car into the shop for a 75,000 mile tune-up. They told me that I need a new serp belt and tensioner to the tune of $400. Is that a legitimate issue, or could they be trying to get some money out of a driver who doesn't know what a serp belt is? Does a serp belt usually need replacing after 75,000 miles?

Thanks!

Hi there,

The serpentine belt may well be due for replacement at this stage, it is the large external drive belt that drives power steering, alternator, Air Con and other accessory drive items, as for the tensioner, well that is hard to say with out seeing it first hand, I would be surprised that it is faulty so soon, but I have seen them fail at that age as well, if you are concerned at all have the belt changed and get a second opinion on the tensioner, it will only take 1-2 min to change the belt so don't get caught with that OK.
